How Power BI and Microsoft Fabric are transforming the world of data
When I started working with Power BI in 2018, many companies had never heard of it. Released in 2015, it was still gaining traction, and I often had to explain what Power BI actually is. Fast forward to today, and most businesses not only know about it—they rely on it for data-driven decision-making.
From Niche Tool to Industry Standard
Power BI revolutionized the BI landscape by making data analytics accessible to everyone. Before, analytics was IT-driven, with complex tools that required specialized skills. Power BI changed this by offering an intuitive, self-service platform with seamless integration with Microsoft and third-party systems.
The Next Evolution: Microsoft Fabric
Now, a similar shift is happening with Microsoft Fabric, released in 2023. Just as I once had to explain Power BI, I now find myself introducing companies to Fabric. This unified data analytics and AI platform brings together data engineering, warehousing, and business intelligence under one roof. While it’s still new, I expect that in a few years, companies will see Fabric as the natural next step in their data journey—just like they did with Power BI.
